When Failure Is Not an Option

“If failure is not an option,
then neither is success.”

I borrowed this sentence from one of Seth Godin’s lectures.

Surely you are familiar with the fear of failure.
I doubt there is anyone, I mean bipedal members of the human species, who hasn’t faced the fear of failure.

When we are faced with the fear of failure, we have only two options, either we throw in the towel and withdraw, or despite the fear we persist.

Many successful people, before they succeeded, experienced many failures.

One of the greatest basketball players of all time, Michael Jordan, shot at the basket during a game and missed. Then he shot again and missed again. Then he shot and scored. Then missed again. Then scored. Etc., …

In 1985, Steve Jobs was fired from Apple company.

The film “Star Wars” was rejected by several studios, saying it was too unconventional and risky.

“Harry Potter” was rejected by twelve publishers.

Warren Buffett unsuccessfully invested in his early career and lost quite a bit of money in the process.

Thomas Edison supposedly had 1000 experiments fail before he perfected the light bulb.

The cult film “The Matrix” was rejected multiple times, saying it was too strange and confusing.

Apple almost went bankrupt in 1990.

Twitter supposedly almost failed in its early years.

The already mentioned Michael Jordan was cut from his high school basketball team.

And despite all these failures, these names are, more or less to “everyone” or at least to the general public, very well known, and not for their failure.
